Welcome to William Murdoch
Primary School

This prospectus will offer you a glimpse of the life and character of the school that I am so proud and privileged to lead.  At the heart of our school community are the children.  Our primary duty is to ensure that all our pupils fulfil their academic potential, but I am aware that they have a great deal to learn and much to enjoy in all that they do beyond their formal lessons.

The foundations of life-long learning are established here. We realise each child is unique.  We want our children to be successful, enjoy their time in school and feel safe and secure.  To gain a genuine sense of the ethos and energy of the school I encourage you to arrange a visit. There you will see how the children engage with their learning, collaborate with their peers and the teaching staff and see how they uphold the values of respect, effort, attitude, cooperation and honesty that we hold so dear.

“THE OBJECT OF ART IS TO GIVE LIFE SHAPE.” – WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Our School

William Murdoch Primary School was created through the amalgamation of Wilkes Green Infant School and Wilkes Green Junior School on 1 May 2019.  We believe our children are entitled to have access to the very best of what has been thought and said and we do this through a knowledge rich curriculum.  In fact, our motto Scientia Mentem Luminat translates to ‘Knowledge Lights Up the Mind.’  The education we provide is traditional and academically rigorous.

We consider ourselves to be a thinking school – we place great emphasis on evidence-based teaching and action research.

The school takes its name from the tenacious and talented Scottish engineer, William Murdoch, who alongside James Watt and Matthew Boulton, were at the heart of the industrial revolution.  Through the deep commitment, hard work and inspiration of the staff and governors, we aim to prepare our children so that they too can go on and make their mark in the world.

Our Curriculum

We have designed a curriculum which provides strong but appropriate challenge for all and pupils are required to work hard, think hard and do their very best to succeed.

We have a knowledge rich curriculum which places knowledge at the heart of the learning process.  It has been developed to ensure children can build on their knowledge from year to year, enabling them to develop deeper conceptual understanding, a broad and rich vocabulary and subject-specific skills over time.

Each unit of study has been carefully designed to match the National Curriculum outcomes. The English curriculum at William Murdoch Primary School is based on high-quality, challenging works of fiction whilst our Maths curriculum is structured using Power Maths, a DfE approved mastery programme.

Our curriculum aims to ensure the learners of today are the resilient, adaptable, global citizens of tomorrow.

Sport

Sport plays a central role in the life of pupils at William Murdoch. We ensure that all pupils receive their full entitlement of 2 hours of Physical Education each week, including swimming, which is delivered by our dedicated teachers and specialist sport coaches. In addition, all of our pupils receive expert cricket coaching during their time at school through our long-standing partnership with Warwickshire County Cricket Club, whose coaches come into school to deliver engaging sessions each year.

Pupils also regularly have the opportunity to engage in competitive sport, both in and out of school, which develops their competitive spirit and sense of fair play. Our annual class sports fixtures are greatly enjoyed by all pupils and we have had considerable success when entering external competitions.

We have won numerous football league titles and cricket tournaments, whilst also enjoying success in athletics with pupils regularly winning medals for their performances in both track and field events.

Performing Arts

We are extremely proud of the extensive choices available to our children to develop their performing arts skills. This includes the opportunity for all pupils to learn a musical instrument taught by a specialist music teacher, ranging from brass, guitar and flute to tabla and sitar.  We also offer an impressive range of extra-curricular clubs, including after school, that the children can attend.

We have our very own talented choir and various dance troupes who practise weekly and perform throughout the academic year.

To celebrate the effort that our talented children make in this area of their learning, William Murdoch hosts an annual Cultural Evening of Entertainment, which has been running successfully for over 30 years. Children have the opportunity to come together to perform in the fields of music, dance, drama and comedy amongst others. This inspiring event is highly anticipated in the local community and enjoyed by all; it is an occasion for all pupils and parents to share in and be proud of..

Enrichment

We are passionate about enriching all of our pupils’ time at William Murdoch and provide a wide range of opportunities for them to enhance and develop what they learn during the school day. We aim to use our enrichment programme to challenge and inspire our pupils and create in them a sense of aspiration- the desire to succeed and the ambition to do the best they possibly can at every stage of their lives.

Through our own enthusiastic staff, as well as links with distinguished local organisations, all pupils have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, experience outdoor learning through our Forest School and attend educational visits to enhance the learning that takes place in the classroom.

We also provide a wide and varied out of hours learning programme, which includes sports and music clubs, as well as more academic offerings such as Classics, Robotics and Engineering, to which pupils are encouraged to attend.
